submitting to doctoral consortia

i am working on submissions for two different doctoral consortia: CHI 2007 and INTERACT 2007. i have never created submissions like these before, and i’m not really sure what the reviewing committees will be looking for. the requirements for both are quite similar.

CHI 2007

  • extended abstract, no more than 4 pages
  • biographical sketch, one page
  • statement of expected benefits of participating, one paragraph
  • recommendation letter from primary advisor
  • estimate of expenses

the CHI abstract must inlcude “title, author information, abstract, keywords, thesis research summary, and references”. it will be judged according to its “originality wrt current concepts and techniques; importance of the work wrt fundamental issues and themes in HCI; rigor and validity of claims, argumentation, methodology, results and interpretations; and clarity and persuasiveness of expression. position within the doctoral process and institutional representation may also be taken into account. candidates who have a developed idea but who still have time to be influenced will receive the strongest consideration.”

INTERACT 2007

  • submission must be no more than 6 pages long, excluding recommendation letter
  • research abstract
  • statement of research area or sub-area, 10 words or less
  • brief description of research topic, 25 words or less
  • advisor’s email address, student’s URL
  • recommendation letter from primary advisor

the INTERACT site is more specific about the contents of the abstract: “name, title; technical problem to be solved and justification of importance and that it remains unsolved; research hypothesis (claim); proposed solution; contributions and benefit; methods used to carry out the research.” the evaluation criteria are “quality of the research and relevance to HCI in a broad sense; quality of the research abstract; stage of the research; and diversity of background, research topic, and approach.”

i have a couple of early versions of an abstract for a fellowship application that might contain some of the above. after trying to write that statement in december, i have been seriously procrastinating doing this. but, if i do a good job, then i’ll have it sitting around when i need it again!
