model selection book

In working on the experiment chapter of my dissertation, I found that I was yet again stretching the limits of my statistical knowledge. Fortunately, the Internets and Amazon.com came to my rescue, as they have so many times before. It is amazing how just-in-time access to web pages and online journals (and second-day delivery!) has helped me to improve my research, just in the past few months.

The latest topic of interest is model selection. I won’t go into the details here — I need to spend my writing energy getting a draft out the door. But I’m reading a great little book right now that not only covers the statistical concepts I wanted to learn about, but also has an interesting “philosophy of science”-type discussion. I have a feeling the author of this book might have a few problems with The End of Theory

Here’s the book:  Model Based Inference in the Life Sciences: A Primer on Evidence, by David R. Anderson
